Trump Might Not Stay In The White House, Find Out Why
President-elect Donald Trump is quickly working to assemble his cabinet and White House staff.
It also seems he may be working out where he wants to live. There's no guarantee he'll move into the White House.
According to the New York Times, Trump is considering keeping his residence in Trump Tower in Manhattan.
This
would be a major change, as every president except for George
Washington lived in the White House. Washington selected the site for
the White House, but it was not completed during his presidency.
Aides say staying in Trump Tower will ease Mr. Trump into the role of Chief Executive.
He
apparently wants to transition slowly into his new job. Staying in his
current penthouse will help him adjust to this new role.
Many presidents have split time between the White House and another residence, but none have officially lived elsewhere.
President
George W. Bush, for example, famously spent lots of time at his ranch
in Crawford, Texas. Other presidents have had similar arrangements, but
all called the White House home during their time in office.
While there's no law requiring the president to live in the White House, security could be an issue.
For
example, the Secret Service needs a place to land a helicopter. One of
the only suitable locations may be Central Park. That presents some
major challenges.
There is also a matter of securing communications in Trump Tower.
Considering
how big a role emails had in this election, it's imperative that Trump
Tower has the tightest electronic security possible. After all, we
wouldn't want Russia or another foreign nation to hack the President's
emails.
Thus far, no decision has been made.
Trump
could also live at another of his homes -- Mar-A-Lago in Florida would
be another option and may be the preferred choice for security reasons.
Ultimately, it's clear that the Trump presidency will be a very unique
one.
